Living Compound
Hotel/Office Hybrid • 2025 • SCI-Arc
Design proposal for the Lincoln Heights jail.
Overview
Driven by isovist, convex, and linear analytical studies, the program structure of this office/hotel hybrid adaptive reuse maps visibility, movement, and enclosure across the existing structure. These studies informed a clear gradient of public to private programs, ensuring that spaces intended for community engagement remain visually prominent and easily accessible, while hotel rooms and private office spaces are layered above and buffered from these high-traffic zones. Environmental performance becomes a driving component of the architecture through an algae mesh facade system that actively filters air while shaping the building envelope. The algae mesh generates thickened facade zones that form inhabitable pockets for gathering, circulation, and informal social interaction. the problem, your approach, and what makes it interesting.
